How to Stop Being Weighed Down by Money
Now this is a big topic, one that it takes me 3 days to cover at my signature event Money 2.0. But I’ve talked to so many people who are terrified about their money situations that I feel it’s important to address it. Believe me, I’ve been in the same boat.
In fact, I’m doing an entire livestream on it – it’s called What’s Your Money Type and it’s coming up on July 28th at 6:00 PM ET. You can register here.
Here’s what I’ve learned about Money – there’s an upside game, an inside game and an outside game.
The Upside Game:
First, let’s talk about the Upside Game. This folks is where faith comes in. It’s your connection with spirit.
Every day we are asked to take risks, do things we don’t know how to do and move forward on scary items. It’s just a part of who we are as entrepreneurs. And if there’s some part of us that believes that God/The Universe/Spirit is against us, well that makes it doubly hard to move forward.
And yet many of us were brought up in organized religions full of myths and stories about a God that can punish at any moment. I’m not judging organized religions – it’s just the truth – you can open most biblical texts and read stories about God giving and taking away with a seeming randomness.
What has made it easier for my clients and me is to adopt the principle that God/The Universe/Spirit (referred to as She moving forward) is always working in your favor. That She wants you to succeed. That She wants you to struggle less. Therefore – you can trust yourself to take risks and make money decisions knowing that you aren’t alone, that there is something out there working in your best interest all the time.
My favorite mantra here is: All Is Well.
There are some days I have to repeat this one to myself every single minute.
The Inside Game:
Ok, let’s talk about work from the Inside – here I mean the way you talk to yourself. How those pesky voices in your head talk to you about money and create fear and worry.
Again this is a super large topic. But we’ll start with how you relate to money. Everything about how you relate to money you either saw, heard or experienced as a child between the ages of 0-7.
It came from your family, extended family and community.
So if you are feeling heavy and anxious around money – it’s normally because you are carrying around a belief that you picked up from someone in your world.
For example, the mother of one of my clients always had a slight low degree worry about money. It didn’t matter how much money they had – her mom always kept a hawk’s eye on how the family was spending it. And she voiced her opinions, often meanly.
What that led to is that my client carries that same worry. And no amount of money in the bank account could help her release it. Not until she identified where it came from and replaced it with a new money belief and story.
Try looking at where your money beliefs came from. Talk to your family about it. Once you can trace the history, the beliefs become much easier to work on and shift.
Until you get more specific, a great general mantra to repeat is: I Release The Money Stories That Aren’t Working For Me.
The Outside Game:
The outside game is where most people focus most of their time and energy. It’s about focusing on marketing and selling to generate more money. I mean the more money you have, the less it will weigh you down right?
Well, yes and no.
Yes, I think doing marketing and sales is essential to healing your money worries. It will teach you that you can actually be in control of your money and that you don’t have to be a victim.
But doing those actions will not necessarily heal the underlying fears and worries. I can’t tell you how many millionaires I’ve met who still worry about money all the time.
For example, you may feel that you “never have enough” until you heal the underlying beliefs, and this can happen even when you have plenty. Or every time you get money, it will go away, because you are subconsciously pushing it out the door.
So the key with the external game is to combine it with the upside and the inside game at the same time.
That’s where most people go wrong. They are so busy working on their inside game – but they don’t actually engage in sales conversations. That’s like trying to learn how to do a cartwheel by watching someone do it on TV.
This is a process where every sales conversation and marketing action where you are asking for money gives you more feedback on your own money beliefs. And as you get more feedback, you’ll go deeper in healing the original wounds.
And by the way – you’ll also be able to pay your bills through this entire process!
Wondering about the exact way you go about making more money? Check out my guide where I’ve laid it all out for you.
So try it – combine the upside, the inside and the outside games. See how it makes you feel. And please leave me a comment below.
