Cultivating Real Recovery This Thanksgiving

One of the most important parts of being an entrepreneur is getting real recovery. And I don’t just mean rest, I mean actually recovering from the work that you do every day – allowing your mind, body, heart, and soul to rest.

Here’s a hard truth that not many people talk about: often, our time with our families is not restful. It is not recovery.

If you are an introvert, being around a house full of friends and/or family can be the total opposite of what you need to recover over a holiday weekend.

Even if you are an extrovert, being around family who you did not choose to spend time with can test your nerves, add to frustration, and maybe even get you angry.

For some of us, the holidays bring up some difficult emotions, like grief over loved ones, anger over mistreatment, or maybe sadness.

So what’s a good entrepreneur supposed to do over Thanksgiving?

Some of you don’t have much control over how you spend the days that traditionally make up Thanksgiving break. It probably won’t be restful, and you probably won’t get any time to yourself.

If that’s you, then I encourage you to take a real break on the Monday and Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Go ahead and clear your schedule now so that you can have some recovery time to yourself.

For those of you that can take some time for yourself, here’s my suggestion: plan out sacred space in your calendar to indulge in whatever real recovery looks like for you.

For some of you, this might look like a morning of talking to no one, rereading your favorite novel, or watching a Netflix show. For others, it will be a brunch with your chosen family. Still others may find it useful to book a massage or body work or take a long bath.

Whatever your formula is for recovery, take a moment now to designate that sacred time for yourself.

Be sure to set expectations about this time with your partner, friends, and/or family so that everyone knows about it in advance and can give you the space that you need.

Remember, my friends – just because we call it a holiday weekend doesn’t mean it’s actually going to be restful. In fact, making something restful is actually always up to you.
