How to stop the “I’m just not good enough” Voice
So many of my clients struggle with the limiting belief of “I’m just not skilled/good/ready enough to charge more for what I do. I’m having trouble asking for money at all, and I can’t ask for more money.”
And for so many of you, this holds you back from putting yourself out there, asking for initial meetings to work with your clients and raising your prices. You are stuck in a vicious cycle. You want more clients and more money, but there is that small inner voice that keeps invading your work time, telling you that you just can’t do it, that no one will pay for you, or you just aren’t worth it. Or maybe the voice just says something like, “everyone else is better than you, how could you charge that?”
Well, if you are struggling with that deep inner belief that you just aren’t good enough, or you just aren’t ready, PRINT THIS ARTICLE OUT! Read it to yourself daily. Because I’m about to give you three really good reasons why you are worth every penny that you ask for.
1. Your life experience is worth way more than any schooling. We all know the stories of high-school dropouts who have started billion-dollar companies. You think anyone asks them about their degrees or certifications? I can hear you now, but Monica, I haven’t started a billion dollar company. But you have! You’ve just done it in your own way. Who’s to say that your own life story and experiences aren’t just as amazing? Believe me, there are people out there who value the fact that you’ve actually dropped 30 pounds, or that you’ve healed your marriage, or that you started 3 businesses yourself. They could care less about the letters or certifications behind your name.
2. You are hired to facilitate transformation, you aren’t responsible for making people have the transformation. Your client is 110% responsible for doing what you say and creating change in their lives. Also, remember that your door may be the first door your client walks through in the process of change. They may need to walk through 8 other doors before they actually solve the problem at hand. But your door leads to the seven other ones that come after.
For example, when I ran my weight loss company, Ideal Balance, I had a client that worked with me for the 3 months and didn’t lose as much weight as she liked because she wasn’t making herself a priority. When she ended the program, she went to a nutritionist where again, she continued to stay at the same weight. Finally, she went on a yoga retreat for 3 weeks where she relaxed – and she dropped 15 pounds. When she called me to tell me the news, I asked her what happened and she said, “It took me spending a lot of money and not succeeding to really look at my life differently. You were the first step in that process.”
3. To every 3rd grader, a 4th grader is a God. Wherever you are in your practice, you are going to attract the people that need your skill set right now! They will be attracted to you consciously or subconsciously because you can offer them assistance at the level of expertise you possess now.
As you become better at what you do, you will attract clients who require a more advanced version of what you offer (at a higher rate, hopefully).
Also remember that what you don’t have in expertise is often made up by diligence, time and persistence. Your clients will notice that.
I remember feeling so nervous with my first 10 clients years ago. But they were great examples of 3rd graders who needed my help, and they are still friends. I just received a wedding invitation from my very first client from Ideal Balance! It warmed my heart.
So wherever you are – know that you are worth every dollar. Stop hiding behind that voice that says you aren’t good enough. Step out – even if it’s in fear – Step out. I look forward to seeing the greatness of your work.
