The Better Way to Get Your Marketing Done
Last week, at a business event, one of the entrepreneurs told me, “Monica, I feel like I can’t get any of my marketing done. During the week, I’m so busy doing client work, meeting with team members, and putting out fires that I never manage to get ahead of the game.”
“I always feel like I’m behind, especially when it comes to things like newsletters, videos, and content for livestreams and social media. I don’t know how to get it all done. Help!”
I laughed when I got this question, because I find that this is one of the most difficult parts of being an entrepreneur. It is so common to struggle with finding the time in your typical work week to put everything aside and get your marketing done.
Now, as a quick reminder, when I say marketing, I’m talking about anything that functions as a vehicle for sharing your wisdom – whether that’s through newsletter articles, videos, live streams, social media posts, or something else.
But – as this entrepreneur expressed to me – the hard part is finding the time to consistently build and maintain these marketing vehicles. There are two scenarios that I often see in people who are struggling to stay on top of marketing.
Like so many of you, I’m super busy during the week. Let’s say it’s a Monday and I’m sitting down to look at my calendar.
I see that there are three open half-hour slots that I could potentially use to get work done – but by the time I actually get through the day, all of those half-hour slots have slipped away from me.
Whether it’s a client session running over, a quick call with a team member, a fire I have to put out, or something that is happening with my family, before I know it, it’s 6 p.m. and I haven’t had any time to do my marketing activities.
And I think that happens to so many entrepreneurs. So know that, if this is happening to you, you’re not alone.
The second scenario that I often see is people trying to cram their marketing in at 2 or 3 p.m.
You know how it goes – in the morning, you already had a full load of clients, and then at 4 or 5 p.m. you’ve got family stuff coming up – so you try to smash your inspirational moments into this two-hour spot in the middle of the day.
By that point, you’re exhausted, and you just can’t do it. You end up procrastinating or running out of ideas.
So, this week, I want to share with you a two-part strategy that I’ve been using every quarter for the past couple of years – and it has been a saving grace for my business in terms of getting my marketing done!
The first piece is that I work in flows. That means I organize my work into half-hour blocks – 25 minutes of work and five minutes of rest. You might be familiar with this type of method, but there’s a bit more to it than just the half-hour timing.
The second part is batch processing my marketing work. So what I typically do is take three or four days out of each quarter to write all of my newsletters or shoot all of my videos.
This means I don’t have to worry about marketing, day in and day out. Instead, I can spend my weeks focusing on fulfillment, keeping clients happy, and managing my team. I highly, highly recommend this process – it has taken untold stress out of marketing for myself and so many of my clients.
Now, the number one question I get about batch processing is, “Well, Monica, what if I want to write or create content that is current? If I want to write a newsletter or a social media post about something that’s happening in the world right now?”
My answer to that is – you can always write something current and then shelve whatever content you had planned to use. Real-time changes are going to happen, but by always having something ready to go, you won’t have to worry about missing your marketing window in case you get busy.
If you want to learn more about this two-step strategy, I teach all about batch processing and how to work in flows in my program called the Flow Method. Hundreds of people who have already purchased the Flow Method program are raving about how simple it is and how much easier it makes their work.
During a Flow Method Day, we come together virtually as one big entrepreneurial group, and I teach you how to use the Flow Method.
Then, we get a chance to work together for a couple of hours so that you can experience what it feels like to get your work done and finish the day with a sense of achievement instead of a wave of guilt.
I want to personally invite you to come join us. Our next Flow Method Day is actually this weekend – Saturday, February 19, from 11:30 a.m. to about 3:30 p.m. EST. It’s a great way for you to connect with our community, learn what it feels like to actually get your work done, and finally stop working alone.
You can check out the Flow Method program here.
