The Secret to Your Best Day Ever

Have you ever gotten to the end of a day and thought, “Wow, that was amazing!”? Those days seem to be few and far between, especially with everything going on right now. But when they happen, we remember them. They strike a chord in us that makes us never forget them but what is the secret to having them?

Most of the time we wake up each day, rush around with not much thought and then hunker down to get our work done. But there isn’t much intention to it. Even if we get a workout in or meditate for a few minutes – the rest of the day seems to go by in a flash of getting things done. And before we know it – it’s Friday.

There is a way to create intention and consciousness to our days. It starts with identifying what we actually like doing. The elements of our days that have us feel the most free and alive. And the things that are uniquely us. It also starts with identifying how we want to feel.

During the pandemic, it has felt like there is so much out of our control. But this very little thing – being intentional about our day is very much in our control.

Now it’s your turn.

Take a moment and think about your favorite days ever. If you have a few minutes, grab a pen and paper. Write down or think about the answers to the following questions:

Think of a few favorite days (maybe it was on vacation, or during a day off, or at Christmas…)

What were the activities that you did that day(s)?

Now I know for many of us the answers to these questions will include family and friend time and travel. Those activities are limited at this time. But there will be others that you can include right now, like drawing, reading, writing, walking, talking to people that you love.

The first time I did this exercise, I was astounded to see how easy it could be to plan certain elements into my days, weeks and months that created true happiness.

Some of my perfect days included quiet time (off the phone), spiritual activities and yoga classes. Now I try to include quiet time, meditation and tarot readings every day. I also plan a couple of yoga classes a week into my schedule. And I try to do a spiritual or meditation retreat once a year (when there’s not a quarantine!).

How can you consciously weave more joy into your days and weeks?

One point that makes it easier is to not try to add these elements into every single day – but instead to add them into the week, month, quarter or year.

That way you have things to look forward to as well.

A great way to play with this is to call a friend and discuss your favorite days together. Then help each other determine what the patterns are in your best days, and how to implement those activities into your days, weeks and months.

During this time of so much change, it’s helpful to think of the familiar  – those things that bring us joy – and actively carry them into our daily lives.

Here’s to creating more joy – in all the little and big ways.
