The Super Weird Thing I Do Every Year
Ok, so I have a weird, somewhat secret thing that I do every year at this time.
I start working on my New Year’s resolutions now. Yup. A full 90 days before New Year’s Day.
Doesn’t that defeat the point of using the energy of the new year, you might be asking?
Isn’t that a bit odd?
Yes, to all of those things. But let me explain.
You see it started when I was 25. I had wanted to be fitter and in better physical condition for a long time. And that year I started doing triathlons in September. I joined a tri-team and a masters swim team and was in full swing of working out multiple times a week by January. And my body was getting fitter and fitter.
I traveled home to Cincinnati over Christmas. Before the flight back to NY on January 3rd, I stopped to pick up Shape and Health magazines so I could get some inspiration for making my New Year’s resolutions on the plane.
As I read through article after article on getting healthy – I realized I was ALREADY ON THE PATH!
It was the best feeling – to know I was in progress towards my goals instead of having to start from scratch. It was the feeling of accomplishment. And that feeling of accomplishment is better than any drug – it’s a high that is purely addictive.
After that – I started to realize that I was totally addicted to getting to New Year’s and feeling like my life was ALREADY going in the direction that I wanted it to go.
To be able to celebrate my progress instead of analyze what I was doing wrong.
At this point, I’ve been doing this so long that it’s automatic for me to get to 4th quarter and immediately start making major changes.
One of my current goals is to revamp our whole apartment so that everywhere I look I see beauty and inspiration. In the last months we got a new TV stand, couch tables, and put up new art. Each week I work through a different corner of the apartment, organizing and clearing out. Just this week my husband called me the Mary Poppins of organizing because every time he looked in a corner, he magically found a new system to keep stuff in place.
Lately, with everything going on in the world I’ve also realized that this process of really focusing on my own achievement has allowed me to find a little bit of control in a world that seems so chaotic and may make me a little bit weird, but that is OK.
So what does this have to do with you?
Well – we’ve officially got about 9 weeks left in the year.
Where do you want to be in January? Wouldn’t it be nice to get started now? And then by the time January comes you’ll be ahead of the game?
Sometimes we get to the end of the year and we feel like we just have to quit – or that the results that are coming are inevitable.
But what if you weren’t looking at just the last 9 weeks?
What if everything you were doing was in preparation for the next 52 weeks?
And this was just the precursor.
I’ve seen memes all over FB talking about how glad we are going to be when 2020 is over. And yes, this has been one doozy of a year.
But we don’t have to just sit back and wait it out. Embrace your weird. We can start working now towards something better in 2021.
What are you going to work towards?
Let’s make these 9 weeks the runway for a fantastic 2021. So those New Year’s resolutions can become New Year’s celebrations.
I’ll be right here, running right beside you.
