Three Steps to Getting More Clients – This Month!
You are the cause, and money is the effect.
You are the cause, and getting clients is the effect.
I love these phrases because they really express the law of cause and effect. Sometimes, as a beginning entrepreneur – or even a more advanced entrepreneur who’s trying to enter a new market – we get this feeling of helplessness and hopelessness.
It feels like there’s no one out there who can pay us money, no one who wants to be our client, and nowhere to find new clients.
I want to share a story that describes how I dealt with this.
When I started my first business back in 2005, I definitely had more time than money. I was doing yoga every day, and my yoga studio was looking for people to help run the studio in exchange for unlimited classes.
So I signed up to open the studio on Tuesday mornings at 7:00 a.m. in preparation for their 7:30 a.m. yoga class. After class, I would stay there and watch the studio until about 11 a.m. when the next class started.
And I developed this ritual – on the first Tuesday of every month, I would go in, open the studio, take class, and clean up, and after everybody left I’d have the whole studio to myself.
I’d go into the yoga room and sit cross-legged on a mat. I’d call in my guides, my ancestors, my angels – the team on the other side – and have a planning session with them.
I would say, “OK, this month, I want to get three new clients. Here’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to go to three networking events, go to my BNI meeting every Thursday morning, and do two speaking events – one at this yoga studio and one at this spa. I’m also going to send out my newsletter every week. That’s my plan.”
Then I’d say to my guides, “OK, you guys on the other side, your job is to go and sign the people and bring them to my events and get them to read my newsletters so that they can find me and my offerings.”
I would light a candle and we would all make an agreement about what we were going to create that month. Then, I would blow out the candle and get to work.
And the crazy thing was – every month when I did this, I would do my part, they would do their parts, and I would get the clients.
Even if you’re not spiritual and you think this entire story is crazy-sounding, there are a couple of super helpful lessons here. Somehow, back then, I was moving based on the law of cause and effect.
I’ll break it down into three steps…
Number one: I understood that I was the cause bringing these clients in, that I was taking charge and taking the actions that would put me face to face with my clients.
Number two: I understood that I needed clarity on how many clients I wanted that month and what specific activities I was going to do in order to attract them.
Number three: I understood that I could only control so much. I could control the topics of the talks that I gave, my presence at the BNI meetings, and the tone of my newsletters. But I also knew that I couldn’t control, for example, what events my prospective clients were going to – so I relinquished that control to my team on the other side.
To this day, I use these three steps when I’m planning every single week, month, and year. This week, I want to invite you to use them, too. Take charge, get clear, and focus on what you can control – the actions that you’re taking.
Try not to worry so much about whether it’s all going to happen. Just keep working at it.
If you want to learn more about the specific actions that you can take to get in front of your clients, where to find your ideal clients, and how to speak to them, I encourage you to check out our upcoming Where to Find Clients Workshop on March 17. You can learn more and register here.
Remember – YOU are the cause, and getting clients is the effect.
