Trusting Your Decisions
In this time of uncertainty many of us entrepreneurs are having to make hard decisions about our businesses, the people we serve, and the people who work with us, but how do you learn to start trusting in your decisions?
I have a confession to make: I run a seven-figure company and I’m still scared of making the wrong decisions. I’m way more confident than I was in year one, but I’m still not the best at it. The truth is that I don’t love change. I think that’s true for most of us.
But one realization has made it progressively easier to make big decisions – the realization that I’ve made lots of great decisions in the past.
Based on my past experiences, I can trust myself to make a decision in this moment. In fact, I have a list on my computer (in Evernote, a virtual notebook) called: Best Decisions Monica Has Ever Made. And that list grows with each year.
Some of my best decisions were things like:
- Deciding not to pursue a job at Mattel (the toy company that makes Barbie) when I left L’Oreal and giving entrepreneurship a full fledged effort.
- Deciding to go back and work full time as a consultant as my “day job” during the first 9 months of building my own company (after 3 months of desperately trying to make ends meet from my new business and freaking out every day).
- Hiring my first, second and third business coaches – all of whom have made a major impact in my business and life.
- Waiting until I was fully ready before I got engaged to be married. Then waiting again until I was fully ready to announce it to the world.
This list could go on and on and on. But when I look back at it – it changes my perspective on making decisions. It actually allows me to see that I’m better at this than I think. And that, despite my worries, I seem to make some pretty darn good decisions.
Now it’s your turn:
Make your list.
And then start to sink into what it feels like to truly trust yourself.
Breathe – this one feels amazing.
