Learning Through Live Events: Ten Years of Master Your Money

Learning is something you should never stop doing, especially as an entrepreneur.  Master Your Money is right around the corner! If you haven’t registered yet, click here to do so – the event is May 18-20 this year.

What you may not know is that the very first Master Your Money event I did was in 2012 – so this year marks the tenth anniversary of MYM! We’ve done it every single year since then (with the exception of 2020, which we had to cancel because of the pandemic).

In fact, beyond Master Your Money, I’ve been doing multiple three-day events every single year since we started MYM.

Live events have been some of the most interesting, exciting, and challenging learning experiences of my career. Even though I’ve sometimes wished I could stop doing them, they have made me an incredibly better entrepreneur and human.

So this week, I thought I’d share with you all some of my favorite learning experiences from doing live events.

In 2012, I held my very first Master Your Money event. Throughout the event, I felt like I didn’t know who I was. My team kept telling me, “Monica, just be you.”

But the problem was that, at that point, I didn’t know who Monica was – especially onstage. I am a high-level empath. I could feel every emotion in the room. I was also highly sensitive back then, and the whole experience was super uncomfortable.

I was living in New York, but the event was in Edison, New Jersey. I remember riding home with one of my best friends and clients, feeling so frustrated and so sad. I didn’t think I was ever going to be able to master this stuff.

But my friend looked at me and said, “Monica, you’re doing this so that we can all learn from you. Being the introverted, highly sensitive individual that you are, you’re going to figure this out – and you’re going to teach the rest of us how to do it.”

And in that moment, I knew there was a kernel of truth to what she had said. I knew that, someday, all of my struggles were going to lead to something.

So if there’s something that you are struggling with right now – something that feels really difficult or uncomfortable – remember that you’re not struggling alone and you’re not struggling without a purpose.

Someday your current struggle will be the challenge that you help other people move through. You will be a guiding source and an inspiration for others who are struggling in the same way that you are now.

As I finished out 2012 and moved into 2013, I finally was better at doing events.

I had spent a year speaking on stages, and I was really starting to understand who Onstage Monica was, but I still didn’t have it all together.

There was a section of the 2013 MYM event where I had to stand on stage and speak and flip my slides. At that point, I couldn’t speak and flip the slides at the same time, so my coach actually flipped the slides for me while I spoke.

I love bringing this up, because it’s an important reminder that mastery happens through baby steps.

It took me a long time to get comfortable standing onstage, and then speaking onstage, and then flipping through a slide deck onstage (which, by the way, I can now comfortably and successfully do!).

If you’re wondering whether you’re ever going to be able to do that thing you’re baby-stepping towards, I can tell you from experience: you can, and you will.

It’s OK to take those baby steps, and it’s OK to ask for help. Just keep going.

Two years of baby steps later, at Master Your Money in 2015, there was a moment when a woman came up to the microphone to share a story about money, and burst into hysterical tears.

I had never dealt with that deep of a reveal in a room full of 200 people. It was such an emotional moment that I decided to use my spiritual gifts to channel an answer for her.

It was one of the first times I had shown people my healing side, and it was really scary, but it turned out to be an amazing moment.

So for those of you out there who are hiding any gifts or talents because you’re afraid of being judged – I encourage you to try them out. Listen to your instincts and show up as fully as you can.

Fast forward to 2021. By this point, I was super comfortable doing live events – even though we had moved to Zoom by then.

I opened Master Your Money with a story about my dad – how he came to this country with a thousand dollars in his pocket, and how he has always been my inspiration.

My dad wanted to tune into the event, but he couldn’t figure out how to get the Zoom to work. I found out later that one of my team members ended up calling him on the phone so that he could listen to the audio, and he cried the whole time.

So for those of you who feel like your family doesn’t understand your business, or that you’re on your own, I hear you. But remember that there will be moments when you can bring your family into your business or honor your loved ones through the stories you share with the world.

Doing live events has allowed me to show the world a hundred percent of who I am. It has allowed me to affect the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.

If you would have told little, introverted, shy 2012 Monica that she was going to grow to love doing events, or that she’d eventually be doing 12 to 15 events per year, she probably would have slapped you.

But 2022 Monica is a much different person. I’m so proud of Master Your Money because it is my legacy, my pride, and my joy.

I love that, when I walk into rooms, women who have attended MYM come running up to me and say, “I still have your money magnet” or “I just tracked my revenue like you taught me to do.” And they know who I am because of Master Your Money.

And in 2022, I’d love for you to join me at MYM. If you’d like to come learn how to transform money in your own life, you can register here.

No matter what you choose, keep going. Because no matter where you are now, as long as you keep showing up, you will be so in awe of the person you’re on the way to becoming.
