Money in the Time of Corona
Yesterday, Jai and I watched and cheered on the protesters on our nightly walk. There’s been a protest on our street each night. I was happy to see that there were so many races walking together. I was filled with grief at the very reason this is all happening. As a business coach, I’ve been asked this question multiple times this week – “How do I not ignore what is going on and still run my business? Especially since I really could use some money.”
These questions told me two things:
- We are ready to get back in action in a sensitive way.
- I needed to write a business article this week to support your actions.
I’m going to answer this question in two parts. This week I’m focusing on mindset shifts and next week I’ll address where to find more leads.
In order to generate money in the virtual pandemic world – we need to get into and stay in action consistently and uplevel our skill sets.
Fear and progress cannot live in the same place at the same time.
What If I told you that if you consistently faced your fears and did your marketing consistently for 90 days, you would get results?
It’s true! It’s true! I’ve seen it over and over again with hundreds of clients.
Because there’s a universal law that says when you put energy into doing the tasks you need to do, even when you are afraid of them, you will get rewarded (know that the results can be indirect and have nothing to do with what you tried – but they will come).
First things first, let’s commit to stay in action and face our fears consistently for the next 90 days.
Now don’t get me wrong – you can’t keep doing the same thing over and over again and expect to get different results. This is the case for the majority of business owners I have met who are stuck. They are doing their business activities backwards or in the wrong way.
They have never learned how to monetize their hard work.
For example:
- I’ve met tons of business owners who have been doing virtual and live speaking events for years and yet are still not getting results. This is happening because they don’t know how to make an offer properly.
- They have been networking for months but they don’t realize how to make a connection that leads to a sales conversation. Or, maybe, they don’t know who to look for at networking events.
- They have done tons of sales conversations, but as soon as someone makes an objection, they freeze up. They haven’t taken the appropriate sales training. Therefore they are only closing 5% of the leads they could be closing. They don’t know how to work through an objection.
If you are in any one of these situations, know that you aren’t alone.
Learning how to be an amazing business owner is about taking the time to train yourself on all the skill sets needed. Learning to make offers while you speak, understanding how to use networking events, and working through objections are just three of these skill sets.
Almost every person I meet assumes that she is “doing it right.” Understand that this is NEVER true.
if you don’t have the results you want and someone else is getting those results, then you are missing a skill set. And now, more than ever in the world of the pandemic and virtual businesses, these skills are more important than ever.
- Because conversion is lower online than offline.
- Because when you market online, sales conversations are done with colder leads, so you’ll need to know how to do a sales conversation.
- Because when you speak online, you must be even more interesting, because they don’t have to keep watching.
The voices in your head are incredibly sneaky here. They will tell you that you are doing everything you possibly can to make money, that you’ve tried everything, that every teacher and training is a scam.
I know it, I go through these voices too! But that’s just your brain trying to keep you safe. It’s trying to get you to stop doing new things – and avoid failure.
But in avoiding failure, you also completely cut off success.
So if you are needing to generate more, take a deep breath and ask yourself, What do I need to learn here? What skill sets am I missing?
Then take some time to find a mentor to support you to build those skill sets. And typically, you want to invest in a program that includes Q&A or coaching – because going through materials alone is tough to do. I’ve met so many of you who are spinning in decisions you are trying to make by yourself. “I know I need to pick a target, but who do I pick?” “What should I price this program at now?” “How do I grow my list?”
I find that I work best when I can go through training materials and then have a coach to answer all of my questions and keep me from circling and taking too long to make decisions.
So that’s step two – get clear on what skill sets you are missing and take some time to get help in learning them. Be patient with yourself here – most of the skill sets I’ve mentioned above take time and practice – so try to turn the volume down on those inner voices that say, “I should have gotten this by now.”
