What I Mean when I Say ‘Money Loves Specificity’

Happy New Year!!! So my guess is that you want a lot more of everything this year – more money, more time, more clients, more freedom. The thing that every type of “more” has in common is that we’re gonna need some cash flow to cover it. This brings up one of my favorite money rules: money loves specificity.

OK, so now you’re probably thinking, what are you talking about, Monica? Well, let me explain. 

At my VIP days – intensive days that I do with private clients – one of the first things that we do is talk about money. I asked one of my clients how much she wanted to make, and she said, “I’m gonna make $350,000.”

I said, “Fantastic! What do you want that $350,000 for?” And she paused because she hadn’t really thought about the specifics – she just knew that she wanted the money.

So we made a list of all the things that she wanted in her life over the next year or two: renting or buying a beach house in South Carolina, getting a second dog, buying a nicer apartment in New York, upgrading her wardrobe, and more.

We took all of those items and looked up specifically how much they would cost. We literally went to a real estate site to look at apartments and beach houses. We pinned down the cost of adopting and caring for a dog. We estimated how much she wanted to spend on new clothing. 

We got crystal clear numbers for the costs of each of her desires and added them up, and the total came out to around $325,000. And that is what I mean when I say, “Money loves specificity.” 

When she walked out of my office that day, she no longer wanted a vague amount of money – she had clear images in her mind of these specific things that she wanted to create

Her business grew so much faster after that. Within six months, she was well on her way towards hitting her goal, and she did end up hitting it by the end of the year.

Far too often, I find that business owners are way too vague about why they want the money that they’re aiming to bring in. It’s like they’re either afraid to look at the real prices of things or they’re afraid to make decisions about what they want.

But when you’re vague, you inhibit the universe’s ability to send you the opportunities that will help you get what you want.

So my invitation for you this week as we step into 2023 is to get really specific about what you want this year. 

Write out your list of material items that you want to purchase, adventures that you want to go on, people that you want to help, charities that you want to donate to, and get really specific about how much each of these items cost.

Even if you’re just estimating based on the information that you can find online, do your best to come up with the particular numbers that you’re working towards, and then start to move forward with taking action in your business.

Again, when you have that level of clarity, you’ll find that the universe starts sending you opportunities, clients, and resources to help you reach your goals.
